More Learning Skills

Parents who want their child to be motivated and to do well in school can help by actively participating in their child' education.

QLN has many tools to help parents with this process. Below is a very brief sample of those tools. For a full set of tools, please contact QLN Family.

Discovering Learning Styles
Each one of us learns through Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic means or 'modalities.' Visual learners remember best through what they see, Auditory learners from what they hear, and Kinesthetic learners from movement or touching.

Supporting Their Thinking Patterns
Each person has a primary tendency in learning style, although all three styles are part of a person's learning. Considering all three styles as integrated is called a Thinking Pattern. Below are ways to help kids for each of the Thinking Patterns.

Visual Kinesthetic Auditory (VKA)
Remind them to take notes on things they learn and theings they say they'll do. Have them add pictures and symbols to their notes. Connecting body motions to their learning by asking, "What does this feel like?" or "How can you lock this in your body with a motion?"

Visual Auditory Kinesthetic (VAK)
Reminding them to be sure to set aside time every day to talk about their learning. This helps to sort out what is important. Encouraging them to ask questions about the information they are learning. Having them chunk their homework assignments and projects. Set clear time lines.

Auditory Kinesthetic Visual (AKV)
Help them set aside time every day to talk about their learning. Connecting feelings to their learning. Have them talk about information they are learning in as much detail as possible.

Auditory Visual Kinesthetic (AVK)
Create metaphors about their learning using phrases such as 'Thinking Patterns are the digestive system of the mind.' Remind them to talk when they are talking. Movement allows them to access their feelings. Read their notes aloud, with feeling.

Kinesthetic Auditory Visual (KAV)
Be sure they are physically comfortable while maintaining the learning state. Have them play baroque music softly as they study. Encourage them to write out setp by step actions to accomplish homework.

Kinesthetic Visual Auditory (KVA)
Having them ask many questions during their learning and studing time. The questions guide their deep understanding. Ask them to use pictures and symbols. Draw the information they are learning in as much detail as they can.
