Taking Responsibility
"Pride of ownership" refers to the way people tend to take special care of things tha belong to them.
Living "above the Line" are responsibility, choices, and freedom. Living "below the line" are justifications, laying blame, denial and giving up.
When you live "above the line" you take responsibility for your life. You begin to make things happen. You have greater control because you stop blaming things outside yourself for your current situation. You can take ownership of your career, relationships, financial status, education or other areas of your life.
We can take ownership of our lives every day, in many different ways. Let's say you are late for an important meeting with a client. Say you are 20 minutes late. When you arrive, you can blame the traffic, but that will not help much really.
You might say "I am late because I got stuck in traffic. I knew there might be heavy traffic at this time so I should have left earlier. I am sorry and I realize I cost you time waiting for me. I can stay later than planned if you would like. Next time, I will leave earlier so I am on time."
As you might expect, this would have a much different result. Taking ownership in this situation will diffuse anger and make the other person know you are sincere in your apology. This will strengthen the relationship.
