Relationships in Business
Success is built on relationships; relationships are built on communication.
The first place to start is inside your own business. Employee fear and mistrust results in poor service for the customer and slow business for the owner.
Fear causes a shutdown of initiative and creativity. Research in neuroscience has shown that sections of the brain called the midbrain or limbic system influence our emotions by releasing hormones that govern our physiological state. Stress and fear induce chemical changes in the brain that distort perception and hamper its ability to process information.
They key to building a joyful, safe, meaningful and productive workplace is to create inclusion and build relationships. "Inclusion" means making sure that everyone has a sense of the significance of what they are doing and a feeling of belonging to the organization.
One way to create "Inclusion" and build relationships within the company is to have brief daily check-in meetings. These are 10 to 15 minutes meetings where departments assemble and cover 3 basic topics: 1) Burning Shares - personal or business items that someone is very excited to share. 2) FYI - important general business related reminders for the day or week. 3) Focus - areas that need special attention, support, or interactivity between members or departments.
